What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is a type of microbial inflammation-related gum disease that causes painful swollen gums. When we eat something and do not rinse our mouth thoroughly, remains of the food stays stuck in the gum line. These food particles are like feast food for bacteria so they start to build their nest in the stuck up plaques and start to infect the cells of gum. Initially, we experience redness and slight irritation in the gums but further, it develops severe pain, bleeding and swelling. Gingivitis is just the first indication that our gum health is not being maintained properly. If left untreated it might cause serious gum diseases like periodontitis and tooth loss.
Why Does Gingivitis Happen?
Gingivitis is a very common gum disease all over the world. It is majorly caused by food residues or plaques accumulated in the gum lines. It is also caused by a lack of awareness regarding oral hygiene, habits of smoking or chewing tobacco, chronic diabetic conditions etc.
How to Prevent Gingivitis?
They say, prevention is better than cure and that is absolutely true when it comes to Gingivitis. This annoying gum disease will never be your concern if you maintain a proper brushing and flossing routine. Make it a point to brush your teeth two times daily for 2-3 minutes with a gentle bristled brush. Also, floss your teeth once daily.
# Simple Home Remedies to Cure Gingivitis
Though Gingivitis looks quite scary, it can be easily cured at home if detected in the earlier stages. But if the gum condition does not improve in a week, definitely see a dentist. Here are some simple home remedies for treating gingivitis. Generally, these tried and tested remedies work really well. You can also use these remedies as a precautionary measure for better oral health.
Salt Water Rinse with Clove Oil
Normal table salt which is nothing but the chloride compound of sodium is an excellent anti-microbial for swollen gums. This also helps in stopping the bleeding of gum and dissolving accumulated plaque formations. To prepare a rinse with salt, take a glass of warm drinking water. Add ½ teaspoon-1 teaspoon salt to it depending on your convenience. Mix well and rinse your mouth with the solution for 1-2 times a day. Add 2-3 drops of clove oil to this solution to make it more potent. Clove oil is also a wonderful ingredient to treat any gum infection.
Essential Oil Mouth Wash with Eucalyptus or Sage
Essential oils of Eucalyptus and Sage have strong anti-bacterial properties. The strength of these essential oils is not suitable for direct application on the sensitized oral skin. They work best in diluted form. To prepare mouthwashes from essential oils, boil 50ml of water and wait till the water cools down. Mix 3-5 drops of eucalyptus or sage essential oil to it and shake well. You can also add ½ teaspoon of turmeric extract but that is totally optional. Use this concoction 3-4 times a day after each meal.
Neem Bark Chews
Since ancient times Neem leaves, twigs and barks are known for their anti-bacterial properties. They have a very bitter taste but chewing dried neem barks or twigs once a day can cure your gingivitis in no time. So, cut neem barks and twigs in small chewable pieces and sun-dry them. Keep it in an airtight container and use regularly.
Herbal Tea with Tulsi and Chamomile
A light brew of green tea comes with the promise of weight loss and detoxification. This miracle tea can be your gingivitis treating miracle if you add a few tulsi leaves and dried chamomile leaves. Chamomile and tulsi will boost the immunity, regularize sleep pattern and also treat anxiety.
Guava Leaf Chews
Fresh guava leaves are rich in anti-bacterial and antimicrobial compounds. Chewing fresh guava leaves daily for 3-4 minutes will not only help in treating swollen gums but also cure mouth odor issues completely.
