Make Your Own DRY SHAMPOO

What is a Dry Shampoo? Dry shampoo, as the name says it, means something dry, used to cleanse your hair, without employing the use of water. Its working principle is just so simple. All it does is absorbs oil from your scalp and hair so that it looks freshly washed. Do not mistake it for being able to cleanse off dirt and grime from a long day’s work.

The spray types are usually the ones preferred when it comes to the matter of using dry shampoo. The common ingredients used in its manufacture are solvents, aerosol propellants, absorbing agents, conditioning agents and some mild fragrance.

This is used, not as a replacement to washing your hair, but, it just lengthens the time gap between your hair washes. Dry shampoos usually come in three forms, firstly, like a natural powder, secondly, an aerosol spray or thirdly, like a pump dispenser. Make sure you buy something that is a close match to your hair color since there have been some complaints regarding the white residue this leaves when used.

How to Use Dry Shampoo

One use of this dry shampoo is that it keeps your hair perfectly styled, free from a wash and some subsequent damage to its style. We shall now throw light on some of the facts this dry shampoo carries-

  • This dry shampoo is only to be used on dry hair, in fact, this works only on dry hair. You wouldn’t see much difference in your hair if it is wet and freshly washed.
  • Just like you spray your deodorants, make sure that when using an aerosol dry shampoo, you put a distance of at least 6 inches from your scalp. If you spray it a higher concentration, you will face a tough time trying it to separate from the rest of your hair.
  • On initial usage, you will see your hair getting white. Let the product sit for a few minutes, before styling. Also, comb your hair using your fingers for some time, rather than using a comb.
  • After application of this dry shampoo, add more if you see you missed any spots and brush through the hair to distribute it evenly.
  • If you feel you have applied too much of the product, then, put some lightweight serum to the spot and brush out the dry shampoo until it is completely absorbed.
  • Stop touching your hair frequently, since you will end up applying natural oils on your fingertips to the scalp, making your hair oily again.
  • Do not apply dry shampoo right at the top of your head. This will leave a dreaded white residue, failing to add volume to your hair. Instead, you can lift the top layer, and spray underneath at the root, so that the white residue is not so visible.

Depending on the brand name, you generally get a dry shampoo for $3 to $75 a bottle, but you should also know that they often contain many chemicals, aiding in the process of absorption. To minimize ill effects caused due to these dry shampoos, you can go for some natural means and prepare dry shampoo by yourself, right at home!! Here is the recipe.

Homemade Dry Shampoo Recipe

Base of the dry shampoo to be used-

Firstly, use the base of dry shampoo, one from arrowroot powder, or Ground-up oatmeal, or maybe one from a variety of other fine, absorptive powders. Organic cornstarch is the most preferred because it’s easily available.

Ingredients-

The primary ingredient to be used is half a cup of organic cornstarch, with an optional addition of 3-4 drops of essential oil for the scent, 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder (for people with darker hair) and 2 tablespoons of cinnamon (for people with red or auburn hair).

Directions-

Blend all the above ingredients and store the mixture in a container of your choice. Using a mason jar with holes poked in the lid is the best option for storage, else, a large, un-used salt shaker, or a recycled parmesan cheese container can also be used for storage.

Application-

Always apply this to the roots of the hair, by the use of a brush or a comb to make separate sections of hair. Then, shake the powder onto your scalp and gently massage it into the surrounding hair. Leave the application as it is for a time of two minutes to the minimum so that it absorbs all that oil from your hair. Finally, brush the dry shampoo through your hair so that no traces of it are left over.

After effects-

You will see that the usage of this recipe for your hair as a dry shampoo will eventually decrease the extra oil from your hair. However, you will have to wash your hair at least once a week, even though you employ the use of this shampoo. See to it that you follow all the instructions and facts as mentioned above!

For something that is simple and inexpensive, dry shampoo is very effective in cleansing your oily hair.

Batiste Dry Shampoo Floral and Flirty Blush

Price- Rs 649 for 200 ml of product
How to use?

Shake the can vigorously. Hold it at a distance of 30 cm from your hair and then spray it onto your roots. Ensure that you massage your hair with your fingertips to cover your roots evenly. You may also brush through your hair to remove the excess product or residue.

My Experience with Batiste Dry Shampoo Floral and Flirty Blush

Packaging-

Batiste Dry Shampoo comes in a long can, which has colorful designs all over its body. It has a spray nozzle which works well. All the information related to the product is printed on the back side of the can.

Fragrance-

It smells extremely good. It actually has a nice floral scent which kind of lingers onto your hair.

My Experience-

I am in love with this product. In fact, now I wonder how I was actually surviving without a dry shampoo in my life. It has simply changed my hair game for good. This product immediately freshens up my hair and makes it look bouncy and full of texture. I also use it as a hair setting spray if I’ve set my hair. You have to shake it very well before you use it. Also, this product does leave a white residue immediately after spraying; therefore it should be kept in mind to quickly massage it into your hair roots to avoid a whitish cast on your hair. This product is a savior for me between my hair washes. But it must also be noted that the next day it does sometimes make your hair feel brittle. I believe that one must wash their hair the very next day after using a dry shampoo; it does feel a little unhygienic with a product on your hair and scalp. On having said that, I still totally enjoy using this product.

What did I like about the product?
  1. Highly effective
  2. Amazing fragrance
  3. Makes the hair bouncy and textured
  4. Quirky packaging
  5. Removes oil from your unwashed hair
  6. Easy to use
  7. Easily available online and offline
What didn’t I like about the product?
  1. Expensive
  2. Does leave a whitish cast on your hair (can be removed on immediate massaging)
  3. This big bottle is not travel-friendly, opt for a smaller size
  4. The white residue (not very evident though)
Would I recommend or repurchase the product?

Yes, I would highly recommend purchasing this product as it is very useful. Not everyone every day gets time to wash their hair and we also know that within two days of washing the hair, it starts getting oily, so dry shampoo helps a lot in such cases. The Batiste dry shampoo works wonderfully well on the hair, leaves a minimal white residue which can be removed on immediate massaging, it makes the hair bouncy, shiny and full of texture and also refreshes the hair immediately. The small packaging of the same product is also very traveling friendly and can be used when you go on short trips and don’t want to carry bulky shampoo and conditioners. Even though expensive, I would still suggest you all invest in a dry shampoo, it will change your life forever.

Color and Texture :

It is white in color and powdery in texture.

The fragrance is to die for. It has a pleasant fruity fragrance.

Experience :

This is definitely a savior for a bad hair day. Whenever I’m in a hurry for going to the college early in the morning I just spray this into my hair, massage it and I’m good to go. Just the moment I spray it, there’s a cooling sensation into the scalp.

It does not leave any white cast after massaging it into the hair. It absorbs oil from hair. My hair does not look greasy at all after using this.

However, it would not work for extremely oily hair.

But overall I feel this is a great alternative for days when you don’t have the time to shampoo your hair.

Batiste Instant Hair Refresh Dry Shampoo Original Review

Hello ladies! Don’t we all hate the look and feel of oily dirty matted hair? Well as it happens my hair starts feeling oily barely 2 days after shampoo. On top of that washing hair often is not a good practice either as it can deprive hair of nutrients making it brittle and prone to hair fall. Not to mention the time it consumes for shampoo then conditioner etc especially when we are in a hurry.  Batista Dry Shampoo is a life saver in this case. All it takes is 2 minutes and your hair looks amazing. It is an Amazon best seller product and the most favorite dry shampoo in UK. (I wonder if even the queen uses it :P) Unlike so many other dry shampoos this actually lives up to its claims. Read on to know why should definitely give it a shot.

My Experience with Batiste Instant Hair Refresh Dry Shampoo Original

I’ve tried tons of dry shampoos and this is by far the best ever. It’s pricey, often ranging from $8-12 per can (the big one) and it can go quick depending on how often you use it and how much hair you have, but it’s worth it. I’ve tried many others and this is the only one that feels clean, light and refreshing and doesn’t leave buildup in my hair. The white residue is minimal and goes away if I massage it properly.  It also has a faint soapy fragrance which I find alluring. For first time users I would suggest to use it in small amounts keeping the spray at least 20 cm away from the hair. You can get best results if you make sections of your hair and apply dry shampoo in parts. If not massaged properly your hair may end up looking grey. It’s a life saver for me on days I feel too lazy to wash my hair. It doesn’t even tangle your hair. No wonder it’s a best selling product in Amazon and UK’s most favorite dry shampoo.

Batiste Instant Hair Refresh Dry Shampoo Original Review 2

Positives of Batiste Instant Hair Refresh Dry Shampoo Original

  • It is light weight and doesn’t tangle your hair.
  • Leaves very less white residue. Gets absorbed into the roots quickly.
  • Has a pleasant smell of generic soap.
  • Makes even very greasy hair look clean and bouncy. ( trust me on this)
  • Adds volume to the hair and the effect remains the entire day.

Negatives of Batiste Instant Hair Refresh Dry Shampoo Original

  • Limited availability in India. Amazon doesn’t ship it in India.
  • Extremely flammable aerosol hence needs to be kept away from fire, heat or sunlight.

Overall Would I repurchase and recommend?

Yes of course! I only wash my hair twice a week and rest of the time I completely rely on this. There are 9 more varieties other than the original and I wish to try all of them. It’s worth the entire 8 to 10 dollars you pay. Get fabulous bouncy hair in just a minute with Batiste dry shampoo and have good hair day every day!
