Mayurasana Benefits: Yoga has been the ultimate solution of many problems that gym and dieting have not cured. Some of these include thyroid, weight loss after pregnancy, hair loss etc. One such asana which is being practiced since years is “Mayurasana”.

 What does Mayurasana mean?

Let’s split up the word in two sections- ‘Mayur’ and ‘Asan’.

Mayur in Hindi means ‘peacock’ and Asan means ‘pose’ thus Mayurasana means ‘Peacock Pose’.

Hindus believe that peacock is a symbol of love and peace which is why by practicing Mayurasana one develops mental peace, patience, and compassion. Although it looks complex, with a little practice, it is quite easy to do.

Steps to follow
  1. Sit on your heels keeping some distance between both your knees.
  2. Keep your hands on the ground, with fingers pointing towards the body and slowly bend your elbows towards the stomach.
  3. Gently place your head on the ground and keep your abdomen firm.
  4. Stretch your legs out, by feeling the pressure on your core, and knees straight with feet facing the floor.
  5. Keep your shoulder bones strong and raise your body with the head straight up.
  6. Stay in this pose for about 30 secs.
  7. Lastly, before releasing the pose, put your head and feet on the floor.

Precautions
  1. If you have any wrist, elbow, back or neck injury then avoid this pose.
  2. Any heart-related issues then first consult your doctor.
  3. Avoid it during pregnancy
  4. If you feel uncomfortable then immediately release the pose without giving your body a jerk.
  5. For beginners, use blocks to support your head and feet.

In spite of difficulty, Mayurasana is one of the best ways of having a perfect body. Make sure you get the steps right otherwise chances are that you might lose interest if initially, you fail to get the pose.
