Basics of Skincare Products Part A Essential oils

How to Use Essential Oils Correctly? Essential Oils: Everyone has been talking about it! There are so many varieties in the market and a gazillion of instructions to follow that even though we think we know about them, we still are clueless about their correct usage. All this ends today. Here I am with this article, to try and help you with the safe usage of Essential Oils.

Let’s start with it, shall we?

Basics of Skincare Products Part A Essential oils

What are Essential Oils and how will they benefit my body?

Essential Oils are natural oils that are obtained by distillation (Don’t think too hard. Distillation means the action of purifying a liquid by the processes of heating and cooling. We learned this in school). They have the characteristic odour of the plant or the source from which it is extracted. There are various kinds of Essential Oils such as Lavender Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Peppermint Oil, Rose Oil and the like. They can be used as aromatherapy (It involves using the sense of smell to relax and stimulate the mind and body) for various reasons, such as to boost energy, stress relief, calm nerves, and increasing focus and can be used to improve skin conditions.

Why is it important to know the safe usage of such oils?

Here is the catch. Using Essential Oils is a little bit complicated. They are used for healing, toning and brightening of the skin. Incorrect usage may lead to allergies, skin reactions and other infections. Since they are concentrated substances, even a drop could have lasting effects.

What is Dilution?

Diluting an Essential Oil means making it weaker in force, content or value and minimizing the effect it could have. This is it. This is ALL you need to know about the safe use of Essential Oils for skin care. To apply it on the skin or hair, dilute it with ‘Carrier oil’, to avoid skin irritation. Carrier oils are base oils or vegetable oils such as Olive oil, Coconut oil, Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil and the rest.

What are the usages of Essential Oils?

  1. Skin: The anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of Essential Oils help in the treatment of acne. Dilute the oil and apply it on the affected area. Leave overnight for best results. You can also add a few drops to honey and yogurt to brighten an area.
  2. Hair: Mix it with coconut oil and massage to soothe the scalp.
  3. Massage: Use the oil to give your body a message to ease off stress and to improve blood circulation. Add 15-20 drops of Essential Oil to half a cup of carrier oil.
  4. Bathing: Add 3-4 drops of Lavender or other calming scents to your hot bath. Dilute it, if you have sensitive skin.
  5. Simple Inhalation: This can be used to eliminate cold, sore throat or sinus congestion.

How to use Essential Oils?

  1. Cleanse your skin with water.
  2. Rub the diluted oil sparingly.
  3. Do not apply the oil near your eyes, nose or mouth.
  4. Avoid using them on the wounded parts of your body.

What else should I keep in mind?

  1. Essential Oils are generally flammable, so keep them away from direct sunlight.
  2. Keep them outside the reach of kids and pets.
  3. Seek expert advice if you are pregnant, under the age of ten or have a serious medical condition.
  4. Avoid touching your pets (especially cats) after usage.

PSA:

Essential Oils are only for EXTERNAL use. Always test your body’s reaction to any Essential Oil. Dilute it and rub it a small amount on your skin patch and check for any reaction in the next 24 hours. If it causes irritation or a rash, wash it with cold water and discontinue usage of the product.

That’s it, you all. Go ahead and take maximum advantage of these glorious oils. Remember everything we learned today!

Who’s it for? The Pantene Lively Clean Shampoo is a clarifying shampoo that thoroughly cleanses the scalp and hair, by removing any buildup.

Price: Rs. 60 for 90ml. (Available in 3 bigger sizes).

Sensitive skin alert? No.

How to use it? This is a clarifying shampoo and it’s not meant for regular use as it can dry out your hair and scalp. Use alternately with your regular shampoo.

Pantene Lively Clean Shampoo Review

My Experience with Pantene Advanced Haircare Solution Lively Clean Shampoo

Packaging: The shampoo comes in a white, translucent bottle. The 90ml bottle is travel-friendly.

Color and texture: The shampoo is transparent and has a gel-like texture.

Fragrance: This shampoo has a mild, fruity fragrance.

My experience: This is probably the only drugstore clarifying shampoo available in India and it is also the best. It does what it claims – thoroughly cleanses the scalp, getting rid of any product buildup. I use it once every 15 days or whenever my scalp feels itchy or too greasy. It leaves your scalp feeling squeaky clean. However, I would not suggest it to people with a dry scalp as it can further cause dryness. It is great for people with normal to oily scalp.

Pantene Lively Clean Shampoo Review 2

Pros:

  1. Removes product buildup.
  2. Scalp feels squeaky clean.
  3. Refreshing fragrance.
  4. Affordable.

Cons:

  1. It May not be suitable for people with dry scalp.
  2. Regular use may cause dryness.

Would I repurchase or recommend?

I will definitely repurchase this shampoo and recommend it to people looking for a good and affordable clarifying shampoo.

My rating: 5/5

Make Your Own DRY SHAMPOO

What is a Dry Shampoo? Dry shampoo, as the name says it, means something dry, used to cleanse your hair, without employing the use of water. Its working principle is just so simple. All it does is absorbs oil from your scalp and hair so that it looks freshly washed. Do not mistake it for being able to cleanse off dirt and grime from a long day’s work.

The spray types are usually the ones preferred when it comes to the matter of using dry shampoo. The common ingredients used in its manufacture are solvents, aerosol propellants, absorbing agents, conditioning agents and some mild fragrance.

This is used, not as a replacement to washing your hair, but, it just lengthens the time gap between your hair washes. Dry shampoos usually come in three forms, firstly, like a natural powder, secondly, an aerosol spray or thirdly, like a pump dispenser. Make sure you buy something that is a close match to your hair color since there have been some complaints regarding the white residue this leaves when used.

How to Use Dry Shampoo

One use of this dry shampoo is that it keeps your hair perfectly styled, free from a wash and some subsequent damage to its style. We shall now throw light on some of the facts this dry shampoo carries-

  • This dry shampoo is only to be used on dry hair, in fact, this works only on dry hair. You wouldn’t see much difference in your hair if it is wet and freshly washed.
  • Just like you spray your deodorants, make sure that when using an aerosol dry shampoo, you put a distance of at least 6 inches from your scalp. If you spray it a higher concentration, you will face a tough time trying it to separate from the rest of your hair.
  • On initial usage, you will see your hair getting white. Let the product sit for a few minutes, before styling. Also, comb your hair using your fingers for some time, rather than using a comb.
  • After application of this dry shampoo, add more if you see you missed any spots and brush through the hair to distribute it evenly.
  • If you feel you have applied too much of the product, then, put some lightweight serum to the spot and brush out the dry shampoo until it is completely absorbed.
  • Stop touching your hair frequently, since you will end up applying natural oils on your fingertips to the scalp, making your hair oily again.
  • Do not apply dry shampoo right at the top of your head. This will leave a dreaded white residue, failing to add volume to your hair. Instead, you can lift the top layer, and spray underneath at the root, so that the white residue is not so visible.

Depending on the brand name, you generally get a dry shampoo for $3 to $75 a bottle, but you should also know that they often contain many chemicals, aiding in the process of absorption. To minimize ill effects caused due to these dry shampoos, you can go for some natural means and prepare dry shampoo by yourself, right at home!! Here is the recipe.

Homemade Dry Shampoo Recipe

Base of the dry shampoo to be used-

Firstly, use the base of dry shampoo, one from arrowroot powder, or Ground-up oatmeal, or maybe one from a variety of other fine, absorptive powders. Organic cornstarch is the most preferred because it’s easily available.

Ingredients-

The primary ingredient to be used is half a cup of organic cornstarch, with an optional addition of 3-4 drops of essential oil for the scent, 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder (for people with darker hair) and 2 tablespoons of cinnamon (for people with red or auburn hair).

Directions-

Blend all the above ingredients and store the mixture in a container of your choice. Using a mason jar with holes poked in the lid is the best option for storage, else, a large, un-used salt shaker, or a recycled parmesan cheese container can also be used for storage.

Application-

Always apply this to the roots of the hair, by the use of a brush or a comb to make separate sections of hair. Then, shake the powder onto your scalp and gently massage it into the surrounding hair. Leave the application as it is for a time of two minutes to the minimum so that it absorbs all that oil from your hair. Finally, brush the dry shampoo through your hair so that no traces of it are left over.

After effects-

You will see that the usage of this recipe for your hair as a dry shampoo will eventually decrease the extra oil from your hair. However, you will have to wash your hair at least once a week, even though you employ the use of this shampoo. See to it that you follow all the instructions and facts as mentioned above!

For something that is simple and inexpensive, dry shampoo is very effective in cleansing your oily hair.

I hope you all have liked the article. Drop your comments in the comments box below.

Should you wash your hair daily

Should you Wash Your Hair Everyday? Personal hygiene is a big thing for us. The habit of staying clean is not only essential to keep our body free from various infections but also to increase our confidence and ‘presentability’. It is a good practice to cleanse our body’s skin daily by taking shower. But, being a cluster of dead cells, our hair is susceptible to damage. On average, our hair grows 6-8 inches in a year. It takes at least 3-4 years to reach the hair from the root to the waist length. If we do the vigorous process of hair washing every single day, the already weak molecules of the hair ends would get damaged more and more. Shocking.. Isn’t it? Want some more reasons to train yourself to cope with dirty and messy hair? Read on!

Should you wash your hair daily

# Less Washing Means Less Chemical in Your System

Most of the popular and easily available store-bought hair washes and conditioners are filled with different harmful chemicals. The limitless use of detergent based cleanser like sulphates, preservatives like parabens and smoothening agents like silicones is increasing day by day. Not all of us can manage time to make DIY hair care at home. So, these chemical based products will stay there in our shower-shelf. But, we can certainly reduce the frequency of hair washes to avoid at least some of the adverse effects.

# You might be Degrading the Texture of Your Hair by Over-washing

Unless you have the most active lifestyle, your hair doesn’t need more than 2-3 washes per week. If you are used to shampoo your hair more than that you might like to reconsider your current hair cleansing schedule. Unlike the body skin, the hair strands do not have natural oil producing mechanism. The more you strip off the moisture from your hair by washing, the more vulnerable your hair will be towards drying and damaging prospects like friction etc. Dryness is one major cause of split-ends.

# Freshly Washed Hair is not that Good for Styling

Many of us have to use various hair styling products like mousse, hair spray and what not to make a particular hairstyle last longer. The main job of these styling products is to increase adherence of your hair strands with each other. The sebum from your scalp automatically makes the unwashed hair to stick together. So, why are you wasting time and money on something artificial? You just need to start increasing the interval between two hair washes and style your hair in accordance!

# Want to Reduce the Frequency of Heavy Oiling?

Our scalp has its own mechanism of secreting an oily substance that we call sebum. Sebum is the most natural way to keep the hair moisturized. When we comb or massage our hair, sebum gets spreads into the hair fairly. It takes at least 2 days of time to generate enough sebum to nourish mmid-lengthhair. Even since I started to give my hair 2-3 days of rest between two washes, I need less number of oil massages and overnight oiling treatments. Hair has become manageable to some extent as well.

# Make the Heat Styling & Hair Colour Last Longer

We all know how damaging heat styling and hair coloring can be. Still, we sometimes feel the urge to look our best in some special events and those styling tools come handy at such times. The effects of straightening irons and curling wands last until we wash our hair. Unwashed hair keeps the style intact for at least 4 days. In the mean time hair becomes saturated with natural oil that on the other hand prevents frizziness. Too much shampooing decreases the lasting power of grey covering hair colours or highlights. My mom has now learnt to keep her hair from washing every day. This practice has made her hair colour stay for 5-6 weeks in place of only 3 weeks.

# Limiting Hair Wash Limits Product Build-up

When we use thick and creamy shampoos, conditioners and styling products, some part of them forms a layer in your scalp forming product build-up. This built-up layer often houses fungus and bacteria those cause havoc on scalp’s internal and external health. Plus, product build-up prevents the nutrients we are feeing our scalp by the means of conditioning and oiling treatments cannot work as they should. Infrequency in hair wash routine might cause less volume and limpness but it certainly acts as a preventive measure for product build-up. So, not washing your hair everyday might be a clever choice in the long run. What’s say guys!

vaseline for hair 5

Vaseline or petroleum jelly, as discussed in the previous article, is an excellent troubleshooter for our everyday crisis.Who knew Vaseline could save us from all that trouble. But what would you say if I told you Vaseline could do wonders for your hair too??If you haven’t tried these bizarre uses of Vaseline for hair Maybe it’s time to start now.

# Fix those fly aways with Vaseline and toothbrush.

If you want a tight slick ponytail but can’t make those flyaway’s and wisps of hair to settle down then dab a little Vaseline onto a toothbrush and brush back that hair. This will make them stay in place and brushed back longer than they would have stayed if you had used hair gel or mousse. Also, they will look completely natural.

#Hydrate that lifeless hair

Tired of undernourished hair? Rub Vaseline on to your palms and massage your hair with it…leave it on and wash it off in the morning with your shampoo. Remember to take only a small amount of Vaseline and do not massage it straight into the crown or scalp of your hair…

If the Vaseline does not come out of your hair remember to add a spoon of baking soda to your everyday shampoo.

# Fix those split ends

Tired of unhealthy looking hair full of splits? Repair those splits temporarily by rubbing a dab of Vaseline onto the ends of your hair.  Fixes those terrible splits completely!

# Frizz-free hair

If you have frizzy hair which is all over the place then rub Vaseline onto your hands nicely and then flatten your hair with it. Goodbye frizzy hair :)

# Leave it on as an overnight hair mask

Apply it to your scalp in small amounts and let it work on your dry scalp overnight. However, start with a very small amount and increase the quantity as you like after repeated uses. See how it suits you!

Many people claim to have been benefited by using Vaseline on their keratin. It gives leaves your hair shiny and heavier and weights them down so that they no longer feel frizzy. On the other hand, a lot of people claim to have found it difficult to remove Vaseline from their hair.

The tip is to use a small amount in the beginning (if you are using it for the first time) and as per your needs and results, you can increase the quantity. Also, add baking soda to the shampoo if you have trouble removing Vaseline.

The results may vary according to different hair types. We hope that this is useful for you especially if you have dry hair…Do let us know if this simple trick worked for you :)

Did You Know What is Hair Wax Used For ?

What is Hair Wax Used For ?

by Diksha S

What is hair wax?

Hair wax is the product a solid and waxy substance used to set and style hair. It is also known as style paste, putty, glue, whip, molding gum and styling gum.

It has been in use for a long time. As the name suggests, hair wax contains wax which helps to hold the hair and prevents disarray. Although their purpose is the same as hair gels, they are a better alternative for your hair as the wax in their composition styles your hair without stiffening them as alcohol in the gels do.

Different kinds of hair waxes can change the way you look and also change your style expression. It is perfect for achieving the perfect classic formal hairstyles as well as funky cool party hair settings. It allows restyling of hair without reapplying the product.

Did You Know What is Hair Wax Used For ?

Commonly used ingredients in hair wax?

1) Beeswax:

This kind of wax is produced by honeybees. It naturally contains a number of fatty acid esters and long-chain alcohols. It has minimal toxicity.

2)Candelilla wax:

The wax is obtained by processing the verite obtained after boiling the leaves and stems of Candelial shrubs with dilute sulphuric acid. It is yellowish brown in color. It consists of a number of esters, free acids, and resins

3) Carnauba wax:

Carnauba wax is famously known as a Brazilian wax. In its natural state, a Brazilian wax is yellow flaky and brittle. It is also obtained from the leaves of the Carnauba plant which is native to Brazil. The leaves of the carnauba plant are collected, dried and then beaten to obtain the wax. The carnauba wax contains a lot of esters, diesters and fatty alcohols.

4) Castor wax:

Castor wax is an opaque Vegetable wax. It is made from processing the oil obtained from castor seeds.

5) Japan wax:

Japan wax is made from certain berries of sumac found in Japan and China. It is not truly a wax as per it’s chemical composition it is more like fat with 95% of its composition coming from palmitin. It generally has a characteristic rancid smell.

6) Emulsifying wax:

Emulsifying wax is a cosmetic emulsifying agent. It is generally made up of mixing a wax of any kind with detergent. The resultant product is an emulsified mixture of fat and water which bind to each other.

7) Lanolin:

This is a kind of animal wax. It is extracted from the subcutaneous glands in wool-producing animals. Lanolin lacks glycerol and us, not a true fat.

8) Ozokerite:

It is the naturally occurring mineral wax or paraffin found in many geographic locations.

How to style your hair with hair wax?

Styling with hair wax is really simple and easy. Hair wax maybe applied to both wet and dry hair.  Even if you are new to styling with hair waxes you could achieve your desired look easily. Hair waxes are generally solid substances in room temperature. When the waxes come in contact with the body, the heat from the body melts it and it becomes liquid. This liquid is easier to apply. So firstly you must take ample amount of gel in your palm and wait for it to melt.

What benefits of hair wax?

The benefits of hair wax are listed below:

  1. Conditions your hair.
  2. Helps hold hair thus styles hair.
  3. Helps enhance hair volume.
  4. Adds shine to hair.
  5. Prevents hair from breakage.
  6. Helps hydrate hair and prevents drying.
  7. Can be used on hair of all length.

Cons of hairwax:

  1. Excessive hair wax can cause hair fall.
  2. Hair wax may damage your hair: The wax in hair waxes inhibit air from entering the scalp. It acts as a barrier over your scalp epidermis. This is applied for too long and not washed off properly after use it may cause damage to your hair.
  3. Hair wax use for a prolonged time period or excessive use of hair wax may leave your hair greasy.

MAC Brow Set Clear Color-Free Review

by Romila D Silva

Who’s it for? The MAC Brow Set Clear Color-Free is a clear, transparent eyebrow gel that grooms and defines the eyebrows.

Price: Rs. 1700 for 8gm.

Sensitive skin alert? No.

My Experience with MAC Brow Set Clear Color-Free

MAC Brow Set Clear Color-Free Review 1

MAC Brow Set Clear Color-Free Review MAC Brow Set Clear Color-Free Review 2

Packaging: The brow gel comes in a transparent plastic bottle with an applicator brush.

Color, shade, and texture: This is a clear brow gel and has a sticky texture. It is available in tinted shades as well.

Fragrance: No added fragrance.

My experience: This brow gel instantly lifts the brows and makes them look even, groomed, and well-defined. It also makes the eyebrows look thicker and fuller, without stiffening or clumping the hair. You can wear it on its own or apply it over other brow products and it easily lasts up to 8 hours. However, it is not waterproof. Since M.A.C. is a high-end brand, this gel is quite expensive. But it is well worth the price!

Pros:

  1. Grooms and defines brows.
  2. Makes brows look fuller.
  3. Long-lasting formula.
  4. Non-stiffening and non-clumping.

Cons:

  1. Not waterproof.
  2. Expensive.

Would I repurchase or recommend it?

I love this gel but I would like to explore more affordable options since this is quite expensive. If you don’t mind splurging on luxury brands, you can definitely try this out.

My rating: 4/5

L’Oreal Hair Spa Smoothing Cream bath Review

Who is it for? L’Oreal Hair Spa Smoothing Cream Bath is for Providing nutrition to hair by massaging and penetrating all the vitamins and minerals rejuvenating the hair giving shine and making it healthy.

L’Oreal Hair Spa Smoothing Cream bath Review

Price:

Rs. 600 for 490g.

Hair Type:

Dry damaged hair

How to use:

Blend a generous amount of the smoothing cream bath with the corresponding scalp concentrate. Apply the blend to shampooed, towel-dried hair. Distribute evenly and massage thoroughly into hair and scalp for 20 minutes. Comb and leave for 10 minutes using a steamer or warm towel.

My experience with L’Oreal Hair Spa Smoothening Cream bath

L’Oreal smoothening cream bath is a boon to my hair. I use a lot of heat on my hair as I love curling my hair up. People having straight hair always want their hair curled up and vice versa. So my hair tends to dry up due to loss of moisture because of heat.

Hair spa is such a treatment wherein it gives life to my hair and shine too. But affording a hair spa every week is out of the question. I decided to do it myself and was recommended to use it. So whenever I feel my hair needs some pampering I use this hair masque and it does wonders.

I use it as per instructions except for mixing it with scalp concentrates (which is ok). Apply it on dry hair as the minerals only get absorbed then and not in wet hair.

Massage for a few minutes and steam with a hot towel for 10 minutes and wash it off. This actually moisturizes and nourishes the hair well. Makes it manageable and smooth.

The cream bath is thick and creamy in texture and white in color. I love the mild fragrance of the product. I cannot define it but it does not bother at all during and after the application. It comes in an aqua blue tub with a silver screw cap making it easy to use.

The mixture is enriched with Water Lily, glycerin-smoothing actives, hydrating cationic agents and purified water. As claimed by the company the Smoothing Creambath helps to control volume while moisturizing rebellious hair. Through massage, the hair is left silky, soft, hydrated, easy to manage, and shiny. Whatever the company claims it does and I love it.  L’Oreal Hair Spa Smoothing Cream bath Review 2

Pros:

  1. Creamy texture
  2. Pleasing essence
  3. Nourishes the hair
  4. Smooth effect
  5. Fizz free hair
  6. Affordable
  7. Available

Cons:

  1. None

Would I recommend it?

I would unquestionably recommend to everyone and I will surely purchase this product again, as it is really hard to find products that actually suit you. This really nourishes my hair and the hair spa at home is such a money saver and does not take long either.
